There’s an animated feature coming out from DreamWorks, and it has Jane Fonda as a grandmotherly Kraken who, along with narrating the trailer above, wants her granddaughter to embrace her Kraken heritage, which includes the ability to shoot lasers out of her eyes… as Krakens do?
Krakens get a bad rap and mermaids are the worst! That’s the setup of the latest DreamWorks Animated film, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. The film from The Croods director Kirk DeMicco centers on a teenage Kraken just trying to fit in at a human high school. When a new cool girl shows up who also turns out to be an evil Mermaid, Ruby—with the help of Jane Fonda—learns to embrace who she is to save the school from the aforementioned conniving mermaid.

Here’s the official synopsis:
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible.
She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbidden Ruby from ever getting in the water.
But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Annie Murphy) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.
In addition to the actors listed above, the movie also features the voices of Colman Domingo as Ruby’s dad, Sam Richardson as Ruby’s uncle, and Blue Chapman as Ruby’s little brother. The supporting cast includes Will Forte, Nicole Byer, Liza Koshy, Ramona Young, Eduardo Franco, and Echo Kellum.
